Kitty and the Can Openers came into being the day that Ciara O'Neill noticed a discarded cassette tape peeping fortuitously from a friend's record collection. The record collection belonged to Ronan Doran, and the cassette contained a set of lyrical folk songs written and recorded on a rainy weekend in a fit of whimsy.
Discovering respective singing and songwriting abilities that appeared almost separated at birth, they recruited bassist Paul Scott and drummer John Macormac, and are now active in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In the last couple of years the band have performed in various venues throughout the province and appeared to acclaim on the popular U105 station, as well as finding time to record their eponymous debut EP.They also recently completed a performance on cult podcast Balcony TV.
There is a sadness, a strangeness and an emotional intensity to their music, borne out by Ciara's haunting Celtic lilt, Ronan's acoustic guitar folkery and John and Paul's lithe and graceful rhythm section. Recently competing in Slice the Pie's All Genres 8 showcase, KATCO were chosen from hundreds by virtue of the freshness and intimacy of a songcraft inspired by their favourite artists- influences such as Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, Ani DiFranco, Elliot Smith and TS Elliot, May Swenson, and all who prize engagement over dancibility, and a little imagination in the commonplace.
Music and further information on the band is available on the official website, Myspace, Bebo, Facebook or on Sonicbids.
